This particular case study was for a customer in Marple Bridge just a few miles from Stockport, Greater Manchester and as you can see from the image below, this bespoke kitchen using 22mm handle-less doors is a functional galley shape kitchen.

This customer loves clean white gloss kitchen look and the handle-less design is completed with the Silestone Blanco City worktop and Lincoln Jordan also supplied and fitted the floor tiles, plinth LED lighting strips, ceiling lights and the cool blue under storage lights, the subtle lighting really does give off a lovely reflective property on the gloss doors.

How Bespoke is Bespoke?

Bespoke does have different interpretations but Lincoln Jordan`s Designer Kitchen Furniture is what we like to think of, and which the industry would generally agree to as being “truly bespoke”. Now whilst say a Harvey Jones kitchen, a Mark Wilkinson kitchen and a Clive Christian and Smallbone kitchen is also considered truly bespoke in terms of handcrafted, made to measure one off pieces of furniture (like our own) flatpack kitchens from brands like Bettaliving, Ikea and B&Q are not considered bespoke in the industry at all.

The Kemble Natural Oak Classic Shaker Style kitchen is effortlessly stylish and quintessentially British with the beautiful natural oak grain a sight for traditionalist amongst us. Shown here in an elegant L shape layout at first glance the Kemble Natural Oak Classic Shaker Style appears to be a very traditional kitchen with a range cooker and mantle but looks can be deceiving as each individual drawer box is manufactured using the latest Blum soft close drawer boxes which are capable of holding up to 50kg in moving weight! Something the original shaker style kitchens certainly couldn’t lay claim too.

Elica Andante 900mm downdraft extractor
First up is the Elica Andante 900mm downdraft extractor which includes a  high powered motor producing 900 m3h of market leading extraction capability which is twice the rate needed for a kitchen of 15m2 and 2.5m ceiling height, where the recommended extraction rate is +/- 450m3/h.

Whilst a faster extractor rate generally means more noise levels the Elica Andante 900mm downdraft extractor (with its impressive 900 m3h extraction capability) creates 38-48 dB  of noise and when you compare this with a Baumatic BT9.3GL Chimney Cooker Hood which has 61 dB of noise and just 500 cubic meters/hour or 500 m3h of extraction capability it’s not hard to see that the style of an Elica Andante downdraft extractor does not come at the cost of performance. RRP for the Elica Andante 900mm downdraft extractor is about £1999.

De Dietrich DHD1101X Down Draft Extractor
Next up is the De Dietrich DHD1101X Down Draft Extractor which with an RRP of £1400 is cheaper than the Elica, almost as stylish and whilst not quite as powerful as the Elica with an extraction capability of 810m3/h, which let’s face it, still beats the Baumatic BT9.3GL Chimney Cooker Hood hands down, it does have one advantage over the Elica, in respect of noise. Where the Elica emits 38-48 dB  of noise, the De Dietrich produces 30dB.

The De Dietrich also comes with a 2 year Warranty as does the Elica Andante 900mm downdraft extractor but the Elica also has a 5 years parts addition.

Two of the best, now one of the rest
Personally, we would opt for the Elica, then the De Dietrich priced at £1999 and £1400 respectively but if you want to go a little bit cheaper the Fagor CFD-60X 60cm Wide Downdraft Extractor RRP £1090 is one of the cheapest on the market.

With an extraction capability of 810m3/h, the Fagor CFD-60X 60cm Wide Downdraft Extractor is just as powerful as the De Dietrich  but at 57dB it is considerably noisier and whilst its £300 cheaper than the De Dietrich, personally we would opt for the De Dietrich as the Fagor only comes with a 1 year Warranty.

What is a Downdraft Extractor?

Unlike hanging canopy style or wall mounted chimney hoods, Downdraft extractors  are hidden away below your kitchen work surface when they are not in use so as to create a flush and unbroken worksurface which is very modern and contemporary.

Whilst Downdraft extractors can be used close to a wall, by far the most common format for their use is as part of a kitchen island, especially for cooking islands as it creates a minimalist look, even when not in use as a downdraft hood doesn’t obstruct your view as the hood only generally rises up to some 310mm above the work surface.

Does a downdraft extractor need to be ducted out?

You can generally have your downdraft extractor in either an air recycling mode or ducted out. Please note that with many downdraft extractors you usually have to order the charcoal filters separately if you use the hood in recycling mode. A small amount of filtered air will blow into the cupboard cavity when the hood is used in recycling mode so bear this in mind and refrain from using the cupboard underneath the filter for food stuffs, as the ambient temperature may be raised a little.

Do downdraft extractors work as well as island hoods/canopies?

As with all extractors, regardless of their style or format, you need to compare the extraction rates. Some of the better downdraft extractors have an extraction rate of 770 m3/h (or more) which is generally sufficient for most cooking styles and a room size of up to 77 cubic meters which would equate to  a kitchen with a length of 6m, a width of 5.5m and a height of about 2.3m. You will also need to consider whether it is possible to have your downdraft extractor ducted out. If you have it ducted out, then it will work better and more efficiently than it would if you were to have it in recirculation mode.

How does the ducting work on downdraft extractors?

One thing to consider about ducting out downdraft extractors is the cost and extra works involved. The motor for the downdraft extractor can be fitted at either side of the extractor and the ducting can run from the top, bottom or either side of the motor. This is where the added cost comes in as the ducting (with an island format) would then need to pass under the flooring. For peninsulas the ducting can run below the cupboards or along the back of the cupboards to an outside wall.

Keep in mind that the length of the duct run will affect the extraction performance and that ducting is generally not possible in most apartment buildings with purpose built flats.

To downdraft or not to downdraft?

IN today’s modern kitchens, homeowners are looking for more than just function, they want form and beauty. Kitchens are the life force of most homes. A focal point for dinning and socialising and when you spend a great deal of time in any given environment, you should find that environment as comfortable as possible.

Whilst downdraft extractors and traditional chimney or hanging extractor are mainly on a par with one another in terms of performance you would have to spend £1500-2000 for a beautiful looking Elica hanging hood, and this is downdraft extractor territory.

Personally, given the choice we would choose a downdraft but as with all of our bespoke kitchen design projects, the client’s desires, needs, wishes and wants are paramount and are advice to tailor bespoke to each client.

The island itself is a showcase of design featuring curved units and inset tray units which is a fine example of the diversity available from the Manchester kitchens specialist Lincoln Jordan interiors and our manufacturing prowess and techniques. A contrasting solid surface has been used for this section to make the island a real feature and focal point.
